Chiara was doing about exothermic reactions today and wanted to know whether heat is taken in or taken out during an exothermic reaction. I love doing sceince on a more practical level these days so out came the caustic soda (AKA - Sodium hydroxide) and some good old H2O (water). Mix them together (very carefully, adding the water very slowly in a well ventilated area) and what do you notice?
Yes, it gets very hot indeed! This is a really good example of an exothermic reaction and, I believe, because it can be done practically it will be a fact that they will remember more easily. Cool hey!
