Maths: Playing with the number 10

So yesterday Honi was learning more about 10s and units and the story of 10.  I thought about how much Honi loves playing with a pack of cards and came up with a couple of ideas for a more kinaesthetic lesson...

First we put all the picture cards and the 10s to one side.  This involved sorting which was another bit of maths covered! Then...

We set out some of the cards 1 (ace) to 9 on the table.

Then I have her a handful of cards to hold also 1 (ace) to 9 and asked her to make the top and the bottom ones add up to 10.  She loved holding the hand of cards and played this way a couple of times.

Then she wanted to play a proper game...

We played it like snap but instead of one pile we used two and instead of using all the cards we discarded all the picture cards and 10s again.

We only said snap (she didn't like shouting 10 but you could) when it added up to 10.  It must have been a hit because she was playing it with her sister Naomi this morning so I thought I would share it on here too.

    1. Thanks Kirsten. I have a feeling that I will be making up many more maths games in the near future as Honi is moving on fast with her maths all of a sudden :)
